Maplecroft History

Maplecroft was built in 1887 by granite sculptor George Mackie. Mr. Mackie was one of many immigrants from Scotland who made their homes in 19th century Barre to bring their stone cutting expertise to the local granite quarries. A statue honoring Robert Burns overlooks the town from a knoll just below Maplecroft and serves as a reminder of Barre's Caledonian heritage. Right next door to the Vermont History Center, Maplecroft is a short walk from downtown Barre, the Granite Capital of the World.
